National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program

The Park History Program of the Intermountain Regional Office (IMRO) provides technical assistance to over 80 parks on park baseline documentation. The Park History Program helps connect park staff to the most recent scholarship available.

The National Park Service’s Intermountain Region contains some of the crown jewels of the National Park Service – such as the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana, Zion National Park in Utah, Petroglyph National Monument in New Mexico, and San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in Texas – but not much is known about how African American visitors experienced these places. The successful candidate will review and synthesize secondary sources, identify parks in the region that relate to this topic, and investigate potential research opportunities. The position is based in Santa Fe, NM and the chosen candidate will have access to mentorship from a variety of historic preservation professionals.

The ideal candidate will be a student or recent graduate in history, with an interest African American history, public history, Western history, and related topics. An extension of this internship may be available for candidates interested in additional research.

This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. Qualified NCPE interns who successfully complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.  Once earned, the PLC hiring authority certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal temporary, term, or permanent positions.
