Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park is the sacred homeland to the Muscogee people. The park’s archeology spans 12,000 years encompassing indigenous and post-removal occupations. The Muscogee people were forcibly removed for the Macon plateau in the early 19th-century but still return to experience the landscape of their ancestors. Situated along the Ocmulgee River, the park includes both floodplain and upland forests. Mississippian mounds are the most prominent cultural features on the landscape. The city of Macon’s downtown is visible from the summit of the Great Temple Mound. A trail system allows visitors to explore the vegetation and wildlife of the wetland and upland environments.
Under the direction of the Park Archeologist and/or Curator, the successful candidate will process incoming field collections and documentation for archeological inventory. Other duties include washing and cataloging artifacts; entering cataloged artifacts into collections database; digitizing photo logs, shovel test pit forms, and site forms; downloading and archiving photos daily; entering archeological site data the Cultural Resources Inventory Systems (CRIS) database; and preparing all project records for accessioning into the park’s archives. Primarily, this is an office position; however, there will be opportunities for field visits. An attention to detail and excellent organizational skills are required.

Qualified NCPE interns who successfully complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.
