🔗Section 106 GIS Archeology Intern – 400 hours
National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program
This internship will be focused on supporting the Section 106 and Cultural Resource Stewardship Assessment program in the National Capital Region (NCR) of the National Park Service (NPS). The successful candidate will gain experience with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, assisting in the coordination of project tracking and reviews for park projects by compiling existing GIS data from archeological projects and creating new GIS data from past projects at parks in the NCR. The selected individual will help develop and populate a GIS viewer that assists parks and regional cultural resource specialists in conducting NHPA Section 106 reviews.
The intern will gain experience in the NHPA Section 106 process and learn how historic property identification efforts intersect with defined “undertakings” and applying the criteria of adverse effects. They may also be tasked with applying the data to identified corrective actions in a park’s Cultural Resource Stewardship Assessment (CRSA). CRSAs are a tool that help parks assess the overall health of their cultural resource management program and identify areas for improvement. They may also be involved in supporting Section 106 training efforts in the region.
This is an excellent opportunity to be exposed to the broader principals of cultural resource management and compliance at the regional level in the NPS and put practical GIS skills to use in the NHPA Section 106 process.
This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee Federal employment.
