The Maryland Environmental Service has an opening in the Technical and Environmental Services Group for an Architectural Historian (classification is Environmental Specialist). The architectural historian will work in a collaborative environment with a team of architectural historians and archaeologists in the Cultural Resources Section at the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland. Responsibilities focus on ensuring SHA projects are compliant with federal and state cultural resources laws and regulations.
The Architectural Historian will prepare cultural resources assessments and compliance documents for transportation projects throughout Maryland. Duties include conducting architectural surveys, evaluating resources for National Register of Historic Places eligibility, preparing historic context studies, and developing mitigation. Additional responsibilities include preparing requests for proposals and directing and reviewing consultant tasks. Opportunities are available to direct special initiatives, conduct research studies, and participate in training programs that benefit the Cultural Resources Section and enhance project compliance. Candidates must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Architectural History. Preferred candidates will have experience in Mid-Atlantic architectural history and transportation agency projects.
