🔗Museum Textile Conservation Intern – 800 hours

Located at Sitka, Alaska, Sitka National Historical Park preserves the historic lands, properties, a battlefield, and resources related to the history of Russian-America and a historic totem park.
Two interns working a total of 800 hours are sought to perform fabric/material conservation of Russian Orthodox ecclesiastical vestments and frontals (c. 1860-1950). Work will include conducting condition assessments, light cleaning, stabilization, rehousing, and documentation for approximately 125 unique textiles. Work will be performed under the direction of park cultural resource staff and conservation professionals.
Textiles may be rare silk with metallic gold and silver thread embroidery. Conservation techniques for both fabrics and metallic textiles will be required. Rare or one-of-a-kind pieces are likely within the collection. This collection was acquired by Sitka National Historical Park as part of a master agreement with the Orthodox Church of America.
Sitka National Historical Park’s 1972 enabling legislation directed that the park preserve in public ownership for the benefit and inspiration of present and future generations by acquiring the “Russian Mission”, an area that illustrates a part of the early history of the United States by commemorating czarist Russia’s exploration and colonization of Alaska.
Work is expected to begin no sooner than October 1, 2024.
This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. The successful applicant(s) must be 30 years of age or younger (or 35 years or younger if a Veteran) when beginning the internship. Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.
