The Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. BLM Wyoming manages public lands for multiple uses including energy development, grazing, timber, and recreation, while also conserving natural, cultural, and historical resources.

The National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE) Internship Program is a partnership with the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and other Federal agencies with cultural resource protection and public land management responsibilities. Its purpose is to accomplish needed and important work on federally protected lands while providing program participants with professional experience in their chosen fields. Interns work under the guidance of agency staff to complete projects or undertake programs in furtherance of the park’s mission.

To be eligible, applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old (or 35 if a veteran) when starting the internship, a college student or recent graduate (within the past 12 months at the time of application), enrolled in a degree-seeking program, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

The Collections and NAGPRA Compliance Intern position is an 800-hour internship with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). BLM oversees a wide range of programs, including a cultural resources program. The BLM Wyoming State Office-Cultural Resources staff serves as the lead for BLM cultural resource operations in Wyoming, and provides support to District and Field Offices throughout the state.

The successful candidate will assist with the management of an archaeological collection and help ensure compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). This collection is housed at the University of Wyoming Archaeological Repository (UWAR).

Intern responsibilities may include:

·         Updating catalog information

·         Sorting and re-packaging items associated with NAGPRA

·         Supporting ongoing collections projects as needed

Additionally, the intern may assist the BLM Wyoming State Office-Cultural Resources staff with NAGPRA-related tasks, such as:

·         Developing itemized lists

·         Creating inventories

·         Preparing summaries

The intern will work closely with staff to support NAGPRA priorities of the BLM Wyoming cultural resources program.

A background security investigation may be required prior to the start date. All NCPE interns accrue 4 hours of paid time off (PTO) for every 80 hours worked.

Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.  Once earned, the PLC certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal permanent, temporary, or term positions. Visit https://preservenet.org/ncpe-internships/ for details about this benefit. Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee Federal employment.
