The Great Basin Institute is an interdisciplinary field studies organization that promotes environmental research, education, and service throughout the West. Founded in 1998 at the University of Nevada, GBI advances applied research to support science-based adaptive management of public lands. The Institute is dedicated to the promotion of science through field studies programs, conservation practices, and public outreach.
The Great Basin Institute’s Cultural Resources Program, in cooperation with the National Park Service, is recruiting (1) Archaeology Crew Member to support GIS, cultural resources data management, and archaeological fieldwork across the Southeast Utah Group (SEUG). This position will focus heavily on maintaining and improving cultural resources spatial datasets, organizing survey and site data, supporting mobile field data collection workflows, and creating maps and GIS products used for park planning, site documentation, and cultural resource compliance.
The position will also assist SEUG Cultural Resources staff with archaeological fieldwork, including site monitoring, field documentation, site recording, and cultural resource surveys as needed. This work provides professional development in GIS-based cultural resources management, NPS data systems, archaeological field methods, and compliance procedures, including Section 106 documentation. The ideal candidate will have strong current GIS skills, careful attention to detail, good field ability, and a demonstrated ability to learn and adapt. Expanded opportunities and exposure to interdisciplinary park projects may exist.
The Archaeology Crew Member will perform a variety of activities to support all stages of project work. Crew size will range between 1-4 people.
Essential Job Functions may include the following:
- Work with SEUG Cultural Resources staff to maintain, organize, and improve cultural resources GIS datasets, including site points, site polygons, survey coverage, project APEs, and related spatial data;
- Review, clean, and update cultural resource GIS attribute data, site datums, site polygons, survey coverage, and other spatial records using site forms, survey records, field data, and recent project documentation;
- Maintain and update the SEUG Surveyed Areas layer and incorporate approved spatial updates into the SEUG master geodatabase;
- Assist with Field Maps, ArcGIS Online, and Smart Forms workflows, including improving data collection layers, data dictionaries, required fields, domains, and consistency between field and office GIS products;
- Review, clean, and update the SEUG Graffiti Report Log/Map and assist with organizing graffiti documentation for cultural resource tracking and management;
- Create basic cultural resource maps, APE maps, and GIS deliverables for site forms, monitoring records, NEPA/NHPA review, SHPO submissions, and internal project review, including packaging and quality-checking shapefiles/geodatabases;
- Participate in archaeological fieldwork as needed, including pedestrian inventory, monitoring, site condition assessments, site revisits, GPS/GNSS data collection, ground-truthing GIS data, and organizing field documentation in NPS and SEUG data systems.
LOCATION: Moab, Utah
The Southeast Utah Group comprises Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Natural Bridges National Monument, and Hovenweep National Monument with group headquarters located in Moab, Utah. Park operations are centered around the communities of Moab, Monticello, and Blanding. The region is renowned for its spectacular red rock landscapes and year-round outdoor recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, camping, river rafting on the Colorado River, off-road exploration, and stargazing. Additional nearby destinations include Dead Horse Point State Park, Utahraptor State Park, Bears Ears National Monument, and the La Sal Mountains.

Benefits
All NCPE interns received an hourly stipend, the rate is listed at each position description. Additionally, interns receive paid time off (PTO), paid Federal holidays if working full-time, and access to NCPE's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for career and personal counseling, coaching, and referrals. Project sites may also offer a housing allowance and/or commuting stipend; this information is also listed in the description or offered during the interview.
Eligible NCPE interns who successfully complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate. To be eligible to earn a PLC certificate, an intern must be 30 years old or younger (or 35 if a veteran). Once earned, the PLC hiring authority certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal temporary, term, or permanent positions. Eligibility
To be eligible, applicants must be
*at least 18 years old;
*no older than 30 years of age (or 35 years if a Veteran) when beginning the internship; applicants who are 31 or older (or 36 or older if a Veteran) are not eligible;
*currently enrolled in a degree-seeking academic program at the college level (or recently graduated within the past 12 months)
*be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.
Interns are not allowed to work more than 1200 hours total in the program; previous interns must stay within this overall limit. The length of an internship can vary from 10 to 30 weeks if full-time (40 hours per week) or longer if on a part-time schedule. If selected, the exact starting date will be determined by you and the NPS supervisor. The stipend rate is $17.00 per hour unless otherwise listed.
The successful candidate is responsible for finding and paying for travel to and housing at the internship location; some exceptions apply. The supervising office may be able to assist in locating housing but it is ultimately up to the individual accepting the internship to find accommodation.
The National Council requires all interns working in-person at Federal facilities and/or with Federal employees receive the Covid-19 vaccination. Please be advised that you may also be required to wear a mask, depending on the protocols adopted by your work site. Also be aware that, due to Government-wide security requirements, a background check will be required if you are selected for a position. This will include providing information about recent housing and employment history. The position supervisor will have more information about these requirements and procedures at the time of hiring. Please note that interns are not NCPE or NPS employees. Stipends are academic awards and taxes are not withheld, nor are social security contributions made on your behalf. These funds may be taxable, however, so consult a tax preparation professional if you have questions.
