    · Experience conducting historical research using primary and secondary sources

    · Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with a team in multiple locations

    · Interest in exploring careers in history, cultural heritage, public arts and humanities, or planning

    · Education or experience with GIS is helpful, but not required

Website National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program

The intern will work with the National Park Service (NPS) National Capital Region’s History Program to compile historical and artistic information regarding African American contributions to the city’s monumental core and public lands, with a primary focus on the National Mall and Memorial Parks. While African Americans are the primary subject of less than five percent of national memorials in DC, African Americans have played a pivotal role in producing our nation’s most prominent monuments. This internship will focus on conducting historical research on commemorative works in Washington, DC, associated with the African American experience.

Research topics may include:

· Identifying and cataloging the artistic contributions of African Americans to national memorials in Washington, DC, including sculpture, landscape design, and architecture;

· Historical context on the efforts and movements to erect commemorations to African Americans in Washington, DC;

· Historical context on the location and design of commemorations honoring subjects that substantially impacted the African American experience.

The intern’s research will contribute to developing a scope of work for a larger Historic Resource Study, and to documenting sites eligible for listing in the African American Civil Rights Network (AACRN). The internship will provide opportunities to learn about how memorials are proposed and created in Washington, DC, historically and today, and how the National Park Service documents, preserves, and interprets cultural resources.

The internship should begin in May to early June 2023. The position is located in Washington, DC, and is open to both local and remote applicants; the National Capital Region History & Culture Programs work out of a local office on a hybrid telework schedule. A stipend of $1000 per 400 hours to assist with housing costs may be available for an intern working in the DC area.
