  • Job Summary: Post Oak Preservation Solutions is hiring an Architectural Historian. The successful candidate will join a thriving historic preservation consulting firm that specializes in historic tax credit consulting.
  • Job Qualifications:
    • Graduate degree in historic preservation, public history, architecture, or closely-related field. Work experience may substitute for education where applicable.
    • Knowledge of National Register criteria and Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation
    • Experience with archival research
    • Ability to travel, potentially overnight (no car required but must have a drivers’ license)
    • Self-motivated, disciplined, and motivated worker, capable of working with little supervision and able to meet deadlines set by the partners
    • Team player who thrives with collaboration
    • Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and Adobe InDesign are essential. Familiarity with Illustrator and Photoshop preferred. CAD, Revit, and SketchUp skills are a bonus. (Software will be purchased by Post Oak as needed)

Post Oak Preservation Solutions is a full-service historic preservation firm with offices in Austin, TX; San Antonio, TX; and Kansas City, MO. Post Oak is currently consulting on approximately 95 projects, mostly in Texas but also in Colorado, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, New Mexico, and Arkansas. Post Oak's primary focus is historic tax credits but our work also includes design guidelines, National Register nominations, historic resource surveys, preservation planning, materials conservation, and more.

Post Oak is especially in need of an applicant who is adept at historical research and National Register of Historic Places nominations. The ideal candidate will also have experience drafting design guidelines as well as aptitude with producing well-designed reports and documents in InDesign. We are looking for a self-motivated applicant who exhibits enthusiasm to learn and improve. The successful applicant will have demonstrable knowledge and experience in the field of historic preservation, a passion for the subject matter, and a willingness to work in and adapt to a fast-paced work environment. Post Oak will provide training to the successful candidate as needed.

Location: Texas

Staff work from home but meet up as needed for travel and coworking. Partners are located in San Antonio and Austin. Ideally, the candidate is in the Austin or San Antonio area but Post Oak is willing to be flexible. The candidate should be located in Texas, for ease of access to necessary site visits and archives.

Schedule:

This is a full-time (30-40hrs/week) position. There is an expectation of availability during regular business hours for most weekdays and availability for occasional overnight travel (reimbursed), though the Associate can generally set their own schedule. Regular staff meetings via Google Meet are also required. Post Oak values a flexible schedule and encourages staff to take time for exercise, personal time, and vacation.

Duties:

  • Take the lead on National Register (NR) nominations, historic resource surveys, and determinations of eligibility (DOE). Communicate with government agencies as needed.
  • Archival research to support NR nominations, surveys, DOEs, and historic tax credit projects
  • Assist with and, potentially, take the lead on design guidelines. Coordinate with government agencies as needed.
  • Lay out documents, such as design guidelines, survey reports, photo sheets, etc in InDesign
  • Occasional travel around Texas and the region, potential for overnight trips (food & lodging covered).
  • Assist in site visit notes and photo mapping. Communicate with clients.
  • Assist with historic tax credit application narratives (Parts 1 especially).
  • Assist with special projects as assigned.
