    Required Qualifications:

    • MA degree in architectural history, architecture, historic preservation, history, or related field.

    • Minimum of two (2) years of professional work experience in architectural history, including experience conducting historical and archival research; analyzing historical data; conducting architectural surveys and evaluations; and synthesizing and writing up the results of research (e.g., building and structure inventories and evaluations, NRHP and state register forms, and historic contexts)

    • Thorough understanding of Sections 106 and 110 of the NHPA.

    • Excellent written communication and organizational skills and the ability to work with a wide range of data, organize details, and meet deadlines.

    • Willingness to work in a highly structured work environment with established lines of authority, procedures, and protocols.

    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

    • Must be physically able to hike up to five (5) miles per day, and carry and handle equipment weighing up to twenty (20) pounds. Long periods of standing, walking over rough uneven surfaces, recurring bending, stooping, lifting, reaching, or similar activities are expected.

    • The successful candidate must be able to work in inclement weather on occasion.

    • Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle over rough terrain.

    • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.

    • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Position Summary:

The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

An Architectural Historian (Research Associate III) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) to provide on-site program support for the Cultural Resources Management Program, Environmental Division in the Directorate of Public Works, U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii (USAG-HI). This position will be duty-stationed at Schofield Barracks on the Island of Oahu. Moving allowance is available; conditions apply.

This position involves a combination of office and field activities. This position functions as part of a team to support the Army’s cultural resources management and compliance tasks, including assessing potential effects of proposed undertakings, conducting inventory and assessment of built-environment historic resources, recordation, drafting National Register eligibility evaluations, writing plans and reports, accompanying cultural accesses, and other assigned tasks/projects. The Senior Architectural Historian will familiarize themselves with installation plans, undertakings, and cultural resources.

The Architectural Historian will work closely, and in collaboration with, the CEMML Cultural Resources Project Director (Supervisor) and the USAG-HI Cultural Resource Managers (CRMs) and staff assigned to the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works of USAG-HI.

The primary duties include assisting the CRMs in the following: conducting effects assessment of built-environment resources pursuant to compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act; historical and archival research; inventory and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) evaluations of architectural and engineered resources to satisfy USAG-HI’s obligations under Section 110 of the NHPA; review and/or preparation of historic resources survey reports, NRHP eligibility evaluations, State historic building inventory forms, and Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record (HABS/HAER) documentation; negotiating, developing, and facilitating creative mitigation; developing historic preservation treatment plans; and technical writing.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, coordinate scheduling and support from individuals in the U.S. Army, CEMML, and contractors to accomplish assigned tasks. May be assigned control and coordination of projects under guidance from the CEMML Cultural Resources Project Director and with approval from the USAG-HI CRMs. The Architectural Historian will also participate in educational and outreach activities.

Must be able to communicate and interact with internal/external staff, Army officials, Soldiers and public in a professional manner. Work requires a high degree of independent judgment/decision making, technical writing and organizational skills, attention to detail, and people skills.

Must attend the U.S. Army UXO safety awareness training prior to working in some areas, and maintain the awareness training annually for the duration of employment.

LOCATION: The U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii provides installation management service and support for Army and civilian personnel, as well as military family members and retirees, at Fort Shafter, Fort DeRussy, Tripler Army Medical Center, Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Army Airfield, Kahuku Training Area, Makua Military Reservation, and Pohakuloa Training Area along with Kilauea Military Camp and Kawaihae Harbor, and additional smaller areas located throughout the islands of Oahu and Hawaii.
