    Successful applicants must meet or must soon be able to meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards as per 36 CFR Part 61.

    Applicants should also possess the following skills/experience:

    1. Ability to effectively interact and orally communicate with parties of diverse levels of cultural resources expertise;
    2. Ability to develop and define procedures and accomplish objectives within the appropriate and established deadlines;
    3. Ability to conceptualize and initiate studies, formulate ideas, develop alternatives, make decisions and recommendations based on knowledge of legal guidelines, INDOT policy, and cultural resources;
    4. Ability to formulate sound recommendations and make appropriate decisions with consideration of potential impact on operations;
    5. Ability to analyze cultural resource data as well as prepare/review  cultural resource reports;
    6. Ability to perform in a professional manner and make sound recommendations.
    7. Problem solving and analytical skills;
    8. Ability to conduct research, draw logical conclusions, prepare technical reports, and make recommendations;
    9. Valid Indiana Drivers License.

The historian/architectural historian conducts historic/architecture and historic bridge research in order to determine the impact of proposed transportation projects on cultural resources. Additionally, the position reviews/evaluates historic property reports and environmental review documents prepared by outside consulting firms and/or INDOT district environmental staff for compliance with federal and state requirements. Successful applicants will have a graduate degree in history, architectural history, historic preservation, public history, or closely related field, with coursework in American history and architectural history;  specialization and substantial experience in Midwestern (with Indiana emphasis) history and architecture, including fieldwork, analysis, and reporting; and familiarity with state and federal preservation and environmental laws.
