    • Master’s Degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Public History, Architecture, or a related field.
    • Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards for Architectural History.
    • Minimum 10 years of experience producing and/or overseeing documentation of the historic built environment, ideally for compliance review.
    • Familiarity with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
    • Ability to complete Determinations of Eligibility and Findings of Effect for historic built environment resources.

    Beyond these minimum requirements, an ideal candidate would also have the following.

    • Familiarity with Section 4(f) of the U.S. Department of Transportation Act, Washington’s State Environmental Policy Act, Washington Executive Order 21-02, and Oregon Revised Statue (ORS) 358.653.
    • Knowledge of documentation and reporting requirements of the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office, the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
    • Understanding of field documentation methodology, including use of digital data collection methods.
    • Experience preparing agreement documents (MOA, MOU, etc.) and completing mitigation documentation for adverse effects on historic properties.
    • Prior work experience involving managerial tasks and responsibility for QA/QC of data collection and reporting.
    • Demonstrable technical writing ability and experience editing the work of others.
    • Experience in marketing architectural history services and preparing proposals.
    • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
    • Ability to pass federally illegal drug test and criminal background check.

Where You’ll Work

AINW’s headquarters are in Portland, Oregon. We complete projects throughout the Pacific Northwest and are expanding operations in the Puget Sound area. We prefer that you live in the Pacific Northwest and work in AINW’s Portland office at least twice a week. We are open to considering other arrangements.

Your Opportunity with AINW

AINW is seeking an experienced architectural historian to join our team at a senior level in the position of Project Manager. In this position, you would be responsible for interfacing with public and private sector clients to determine appropriate strategies for documenting and evaluating historic built environment resources based on applicable laws and regulations. You would develop scopes of work and cost estimates, assign the most appropriate AINW architectural historians for the job, and oversee the successful completion of projects through agency review. In this position, you would have opportunities to assist with field surveys, complete built environment documentation, and write technical reports, but your primary responsibility would be to direct project tasks and ensure successful project delivery.

You would report to AINW’s Senior Project Manager/Senior Architectural Historian or other project managers at AINW. We are seeking a candidate who can work full-time and travel occasionally (5% – 10% of your time) when needed for meetings and fieldwork.
