  • Job Qualifications:

    Key Duties:

    • Perform research online and in person at a variety of repositories and archives.
    • Disseminate, research, and write archaeological, cultural, historical, and environmental contexts.
    • Assist in the preparation of project-specific research designs, and work- and safety-plans.
    • Perform and supervise archaeological fieldwork through surface surveys, shovel testing, test unit excavations, unit and trench excavations, and feature excavations.
    • Supervise increasingly complex Phase I archaeological surveys and Phase II archaeological testing and evaluation; may assist with supervision of Phase III excavation, data recovery, and mitigation.
    • Train archaeological field technicians.
    • Perform archaeological, cultural, and historical artifact and laboratory analysis and prepare artifacts and records for curation.
    • Contribute to the preparation of written archaeological, cultural, historical, and environmental contexts and a variety of archaeological documentation and technical reports.
    • Using the National Register of Historic Places Criteria, make preliminary resource evaluations and recommendations related to archaeological resources identified during project work.
    • Complete work within assigned schedules and budgets.
    • Transport field personnel and equipment to and from project sites.
    • Assist in the training of new or junior employees.
    • Participate in public outreach programs to educate the public about the importance of archaeological resources and Heritage Management, at the project, professional, and/or community levels.

     

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • BA/BS in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field.
    • 2 years of CRM supervisory experience.
    • Qualified to register as an RA or RPA with the Register of Professional Archaeologists
    •  Capability to excavate and document excavations.
    • Familiarity with GIS/ ESRI Survey 123 and Collector, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat.
    • Traditional and digital mapping, including total station and GPS-based mapping skills; photography; survey techniques; and excavation techniques.
    • Demonstrable report writing experience.
    • Ability to analyze data such as statistical analysis, material culture analysis, and geomorphological analysis.
    • Good understanding of the legal framework of CRM.
    • Capability to excavate and document excavations.
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license and ability to operate a passenger car/light truck.

Gray & Pape, a national and international cultural heritage management firm, has an opening for an Archaeologist 2 to join our Archaeology practice and support our Richmond, VA office. This role is an hourly, non-exempt position expected to last 6 months, pending ongoing availability of project work. This opportunity may be extended or converted into a regular position with Gray & Pape. The pay is $23.50 per hour with full benefits. Gray & Pape offers a hybrid work environment with built-in flexibility for days in the office.

Role Summary:

The Archaeologist 2 is responsible for supervising all aspects of archaeological studies.
