  • Job Qualifications:

    What you must have (minimum qualifications):

    • Master’s degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or a related field
    • Minimum of 2 years of continuous or equivalent professional experience in Architectural History

    What we would like you to have (preferred skills):

    Specializations such as historic architecture, historic landscapes, transportation studies, public history, history, conservation, or historic interpretation; command of NEPA, NHPA, and other state and federal environmental regulations; a history working with private and public sector clients and regulatory agencies; knowledgeable in the history and architectural history of the Southwestern US; knowledge related to other regions of the United States is a plus; interest in developing or enhancing leadership skills to contribute to a progressive work environment for; employee development and career fulfillment; familiarity with ArcGIS and variety of GPS equipment

Horizon is seeking an Architectural Historian/Historic Preservation Specialist to contribute to built environment and cultural resources studies as either stand-alone projects or as part of larger multi-disciplinary projects.  You will combine your technical skills with strong regulatory compliance expertise to develop project-level analysis for National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) compliance on a wide variety of projects, including transportation, land development, and public utilities.  The Architectural Historian/Historic Preservation Specialist will work closely with our senior architectural historian and archaeologists on project work, with opportunities to manage individual projects and collaborate on larger-scale project efforts.

In this position, you will:

  • Evaluate resources for National Register of Historic Places eligibility, develop resource management recommendations, assess project effects on resources, and provide high-level support to address complex management challenges that require technical or regulatory knowledge.
  • Provide technical expertise in architectural history, including technical approach development, self-directed technical analysis and documentation, and collaboration with junior and senior technical colleagues.
  • Participate in technical leadership on projects related to environmental compliance and cultural resource management, including client contact, task order management, budget monitoring, schedule, and subcontractor coordination.
  • Contribute to marketing and proposal efforts for cultural resources opportunities or as part of a larger team on multi-disciplinary opportunities.
  • Collaborate in an integrated team with engineers, scientists, planners, regulators, and other stakeholders.
  • Work with other cultural resources staff who provide technical support in field and office settings.
  • Travel as necessary to gather data on historical resources, including photography and gathering GIS/spatial data.
