    Strong computer, research, and writing skills are essential. Creating Section 508 compliant documents training will be provided, but familiarity with Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign, is required. A working knowledge of U.S. History, American architectural styles, and/or Historic Preservation. Awareness of the NHL and/or the National Register of Historic Places programs is preferred.

National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program

The successful candidate will develop the “Explore” brochure, which is targeted to the public to raise awareness about National Park Service (NPS) programs and partners. The intern will have input on the focus of the brochure, which will feature an urban area within the Midwest –  NPS Interior Regions 3, 4 and 5 – such as Chicago, Detroit, Kansas City or Minneapolis. The brochure will provide information on NPS programs including National Historic Landmarks (NHLs), National Heritage Areas, Historic Surplus Property, and the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. The intern will create the content and design for the brochure and will ensure consistency with NPS graphic standards, principles of communication, and compliance standards with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, for greater accessibility by users of differing abilities.

Secondary duties may include writing social media content, reviewing Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record documents, or providing editorial assistance to Underground Railroad Network to Freedom nominations. Some project-related travel may be required and will be funded by the program.

The intern will work under the supervision of a Historic Preservation Partnerships program Architectural Historian. The internship is located in Omaha, NE. The intern is responsible for housing and transportation to and from Omaha; travel and housing stipends are included.

This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. Qualified NCPE interns who successfully complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.  Once earned, the PLC hiring authority certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal temporary, term, or permanent positions.
