    The intern is expected to contribute to the museum collections program and carry out responsibilities in museum collections management. Desired competencies may include comprehensive knowledge and application of professional museum management policy, handling and caring for collection materials, and a proficiency at implementing collections management plans (housekeeping, integrated pest management, environmental monitoring). Proficiency with database management including ICMS/Re: Discovery or other similar programs is preferred. Attention to detail, flexibility, a willingness to learn, and communication skills are important for this position. A museum studies or archeology concentration or background is required.

National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program

This internship provides museum collections support for Camp Nelson National Monument, Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument, and Medger and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument.

The intern will work under the supervision of National Park Service (NPS) Historians and Cultural Resource program managers on rehousing and cleaning historical and archeological museum objects, and generalized collections care work. Duties include handling and cleaning museum objects, creating custom mounts and supports for collections in storage, database entry (updating catalog records), assisting in annual inventories, integrated pest management, and environmental data collection of museum facilities. The position will include traveling between the parks in Kentucky and Mississippi. Additional tasks may include aiding with research requests as assigned.

The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience in preserving different collection and object types and managing collection storage and exhibit spaces. The position is onsite in Lexington, KY, beginning mid-May for 12 weeks. Housing and travel stipends are provided.
