The Network to Freedom is a program with the National Park Service (NPS) with a mission to honor, preserve and promote the history of resistance to enslavement through escape and flight. Underground Railroad History continues to inspire people worldwide. Through its mission, the Network to Freedom (NTF) advances the idea that all human beings embrace the right to self-determination and freedom from oppression. The program is a catalyst for innovation and partnerships that share the diverse legacy of the Underground Railroad across generations. The program works in collaboration with local, state and federal entities, as well as individuals and organizations to create a “network” of sites, facilities, and programs with a verifiable connection to the Underground Railroad.
The National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program (NTF) seeks an intern to work in the Cultural Resources Division of the National Park Service’s Midwest Regional Office in Omaha, Nebraska. Project work will include conducting historical research which will be used to identify sites associated with the Lane Trail and the Underground Railroad. The geographic region of the research will extend from Kansas to Nebraska and Iowa. Travel will be required to conduct research in each respective state. The candidate will compile a bibliography of primary and secondary source material for each individual site identified. Other projects may include review of new NTF applications from the Midwest, updating outdated NTF applications, technical assistance to NTF partners and assisting with other duties that support the NTF mission.
Work will be performed under the supervision of the NTF Midwest Regional Manager/Historian. The position is based at the Midwest Regional Office in Omaha, Nebraska, and is planned for May to July, 2024.
This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. Qualified NCPE interns who successfully complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.
