  • Job Summary: Through this internship, an emerging historic preservationist can help advance our mission to promote and preserve historic places, buildings, downtowns and neighborhoods--strengthening the cultural and economic vitality of Maine communities.
  • Job Qualifications:

    Current enrollment in or recent completion of a master’s degree focusing on historic preservation, or a related field is required.

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to successfully manage multiple projects
    • Willingness to learn and follow directions
    • High motivation as evidenced by a positive attitude, punctuality, organization, and a strong work ethic
    • Knowledge of historic preservation best practices and current issues
    • Ability to conduct in-depth research on historic buildings, relevant local and state legislation, and policy initiatives

Maine Preservation, founded in 1972, is a statewide non-profit historic preservation organization. Our mission is to promote and preserve historic places, buildings, downtowns and neighborhoods, strengthening the cultural and economic vitality of Maine communities.

Responsibilities with MP staff include research and writing along with support of events and programs. Focuses may include:

  • Identifying and organizing engagement data, and developing effective means to present this information publicly
  • Researching and executing advocacy strategies to support a state ballot initiative and prepare for the reintroduction of a bill to expand the Maine Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit
  • Reviewing and considering MP’s participation as a consulting party in Section 106 reviews
  • Assisting with events and programs like our Gala, Honor Awards, and Old Building Forum
  • Identifying, researching, and organizing successful adaptive reuse case studies
  • Supporting MP staff with other mission-focused work as assigned

The remote internship will generally run from mid-September to mid-December, with the possibility of continuing into the Spring. Interns will be compensated at $15.00 per hour. Interns should plan to work 8-16 hours per week. The maximum allowable time commitment for the semester is 224 hours.
