The Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area celebrates the central Appalachian forest - its history, culture, natural resources, and forest heritage. Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area (AFNHA) focuses on cultural heritage, conservation, and tourism to support rural community development in western Maryland and the highlands of West Virginia. AFNHA AmeriCorps program provides service to community partners in the West Virginia mountains for cultural heritage and conservation projects.
AFNHA is seeking AmeriCorps National Service members for cultural heritage or conservation one-year positions for program year beginning September 2025. Heritage AmeriCorps members help rural communities with economic development based on their cultural heritage resources and tourism assets. Heritage members serve with historical sites, museums, cultural or community groups, and visitor centers to preserve and interpret historic assets and Appalachian culture, and to support community development. Member projects may focus on cultural heritage, museums, collections, interpretation, public education, stewardship, and outreach. They may create exhibits, organize archives, lead history tours, support events and festivals, preserve historic structures, and encourage heritage tourism visitors. Conservation and natural resource positions are also available. Learn about and gain professional experience towards careers in public history, museums, cultural resources, interpretation, communications, event planning, tourism, and more. Natural resource conservation AmeriCorps positions also available in the program. Positions available may be located in Elkins, West Virginia or surrounding eastern West Virginia counties, for members living in friendly communities in an outstandingly beautiful mountain area with abundant recreational opportunities. AFNHA AmeriCorps service also provides opportunities for a variety training, service projects and team activities. While ideal start date is early September, recruiting will continue for start times through fall 2025 or until all positions are filled.
