  • Job Qualifications:

    Duties: The Staff Architectural Historian will provide assistance to cultural resources projects of all sizes. The Staff Architectural Historian is responsible for historical and technical research and reporting. Responsibilities include completing archival research; conducting architectural and historical structure surveys and inventories; recording and evaluating historic built environment resources according to criteria of historical significance under the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and California Register of Historical Resources (CRHR); evaluating integrity of historic properties and/or historical resources; writing elements of technical reports; and contributing to the preparation of proposals.

    Skill Requirements:  

    • Participate in the planning and/or completion of site visits and fieldwork, sometimes independently, for built-environment surveys and inventories;
    • Record, document, and evaluate historical objects, buildings, structures, and landscapes to current professional standards;
    • Review design plans for consistency with the US Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines; Complete historical and archival research, using primary and secondary documentary sources;
    • Perform oral history research;
    • Understand regulatory contexts through the relevant state, local, and federal laws, implementing regulations, and policies and procedures (e.g., but not limited to the California Environmental Quality Act [CEQA], National Environmental Policy Act [NEPA], and National Historic Preservation Act [NHPA]);
    • Assist with the development of historic contexts and write historic background overviews;
    • Contribute to documentation meeting national and/or state-level documentation requirements (including, but not limited to, NRHP, HABS/HAER/HALS, CRHR, and DPR 523 forms);
    • Attend to details in budgets, schedules, deliverables, and tasks related to specific projects;
    • Contribute to project proposals, research designs/treatment plans, and technical reports;
    • Possess strong technical writing and oral communication skills;
    • Adapt quickly and demonstrate flexibility to changes in project needs;
    • Work independently and collaboratively with a variety of colleagues, clients, agency representatives, construction contractors, and other project stakeholders. Some client and/or agency interaction is anticipated.

    Education and Experience:

    • Undergraduate or graduate degree in history, art history, architectural history, historic preservation, or related field required.
    • Previous relevant experience; cultural resource management experience preferred.

    An employee in this CA-based position can expect an hourly wage of $22.50-$30.00/hour for the Staff Architectural Historian position. Applied EarthWorks, Inc. has an immediate opening for a Staff Architectural Historian to work on projects throughout the Central Valley and Central Coast of California. This is a regular, full-time based on workload and the candidate’s skills. Most work will be performed in the Fresno office or in the field. Note: Other locations in which Æ has offices will be considered but this is not a remote position.

Pay Range: Staff $22.50 – $30.00/hour DOE
