The Aurora Historic Sites and Preservation Office (AHSPO) is tasked with the maintenance of city-owned historic landmarks, assistance in landmark nominations, and reviewing federally funded projects that affect historic buildings (NHPA Sec. 106). The AHSPO also commissions reconnaissance and intensive surveys and manages grant-funded restorations and renovations.

The Aurora History Museum & Historic Sites is seeking two (2) dedicated individuals for research-oriented volunteer terms. These internships provide a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on research of historic resources in Aurora through access to the Aurora History Museum’s archives as well as oral history interviews and online research materials. Interns will work closely with the Historic Preservation team to either research and synthesize information on military resources in Aurora or work on Phase II of the Cultural Heritage Site nomination form for Koreatown through oral histories with business owners and continued research on the cultural community.

The ideal candidate will be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate historic preservation program (or closely related field) or will have recently graduated from a program and is seeking additional, hands-on experience. At the completion of the internship, the candidates will present on the work they accomplished and any new skills or knowledge they learned throughout their time working on the project to the funding organization (Aurora Museum Foundation or Aurora Historical Society). To support your commitment, the City has secured grant funding that will provide a stipend to each of the chosen candidates, on condition of fulfilling the grant requirements. Grant requirements to receive the stipend are satisfactory completion of the internship projects as defined by the Historic Preservation Specialist. A total stipend of $2,500 is available to help cover potential living or educational expenses. The stipend will be issued in parts: $500 stipend at the completion of Task 1, as defined by the Historic Preservation Specialist; $1,000 at the completion of Task 2 as defined by the Historic Preservation Specialist; and the final $1,000 stipend issued upon successful completion of Task 3, as defined by the Historic Preservation Specialist.
