The City's Historic Preservation program began in 1974 with the City Council’s adoption of the City’s first preservation ordinance and in early 1975 the City Council appointed the first “Preservation Board.” Since then, the program has become a city-wide “Certified Local Government ” program with a seven-member Preservation Commission and a Historic & Cultural Resources Element of the City’s General Plan. The program’s primary objectives are to identify, protect, and assist in the preservation, rehabilitation, adaptive reuse, and awareness of the City’s historic and cultural resources.
The Historic Preservation Intern works under the direction of the Preservation Director to support the City’s Historic Preservation Program, including the design review, education and outreach, and research functions. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated interest in preservation planning and experience evaluating historic buildings. Along with the general support described above, interns will support one or more of the following projects:
1) Evaluating and researching potential historic properties
2) Performing reconnaissance surveys photographing local sites
3) Processing plaque applications and drafting plaque content
4) Assisting with public meetings for historic context and survey projects
5) Processing Mills Act contracts
6) Reviewing preservation projects with assistance from preservation staff
Additional duties include, but may not be limited to, conducting research and analyses, support in preparing reports, coordination with other City departments, consultants, community groups, and public agencies. Additional administrative duties as needed.
