Website Clara Barton Fund
The Clara Barton Fund (CBF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the legacy of Clara Barton through public education, nonprofit management, and national park advocacy. We partner closely with the National Park Service (NPS) and the George Washington Memorial Parkway to support the Clara Barton National Historic Site in Glen Echo, Maryland, which served as the headquarters of the American Red Cross.
The Clara Barton Fund is seeking a highly organized, historically minded Graduate Student Fellow to manage the development of a new immersive digital experience for the Clara Barton National Historic Site. Funded in part by a grant from the Maryland Two Fifty Commission, this fellowship offers a unique opportunity to shape public history at a critical moment, as the physical site undergoes restoration and we prepare for the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The primary responsibility of the Fellow will be project management for a major partnership with CyArk, a pioneer in 3D recording and digital preservation. The Fellow will coordinate the creation of a “Tapestry” virtual tour, which will include a 3D digital twin of the house, archival media integration, interactive storytelling elements, and oral histories. Beyond project management, the Fellow will provide critical historical research assistance and develop interpretive content to bring Clara Barton’s legacy to life for a modern audience.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Management (CyArk Virtual Tour) The Fellow will serve as the day-to-day coordinator for the CyArk Tapestry project, ensuring that deliverables are met on time and aligned with CBF’s strategic goals. Responsibilities include:
Coordinating logistics and communications between CBF leadership, CyArk producers, and National Park Service staff.
Facilitating 2 to 4 virtual storyboarding and scripting workshops with key stakeholders.
Managing the timeline for CBF deliverables, including reviewing and synthesizing feedback on storyboards, scripts, and draft digital experiences.
Securing necessary permissions from NPS for CyArk’s fieldwork, 3D capture, and filming at the historic site.
Tracking project milestones to ensure alignment with the billing schedule and grant reporting deadlines.
Interpretive Content Creation
The virtual tour requires rich, layered storytelling. The Fellow will assist with sourcing, drafting, and organizing the narrative elements of the Tapestry experience in collaboration with the National Park Service and other stakeholders. Responsibilities include:
Identifying, sourcing, and cataloging up to 20 media items (historical photographs, documents, audio clips, and video) for inclusion in the virtual tour.
Selecting up to 5 specific artifacts or objects not currently in the house for 3D digitization, coordinating their access and documentation.
Drafting and refining narrative scripts for 6–8 virtual “scenes,” ensuring historical accuracy and engaging, accessible prose.
Writing descriptive copy for up to 10 interactive “hot spots” within the 3D model.
Identifying and coordinating potential interviewees for the “voices” component of the Tapestry, which may include contemporary experts or archival oral histories.
Research Assistance & Grant Support
To ensure the historical integrity of the project and compliance with funding requirements, the Fellow will:
Conduct targeted historical research on Clara Barton, the early years of the American Red Cross, and the architectural history of the Glen Echo home to inform the virtual tour script.
Assist CBF leadership in preparing the final financial and narrative reports for the Maryland Two Fifty Commission grant (due December 2026).
Support other ad hoc research and writing tasks related to CBF’s public education and fundraising initiatives as needed.
