🔗Archaeology Repository Intern – 400 hours
Website National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program
The mission of the Archaeological Repository of Colorado State University is to curate and preserve archaeological collections and promote their educational, scientific and cultural use to benefit a diverse public. The Repository manages the archaeological artifacts and associated paperwork and images of the Colorado State University’s Department of Anthropology and other archaeological collections from public and private lands in Colorado obtained in the course of cultural resource management (CRM) and field schools. The vast majority of archaeological collections held in the repository are from Northern Colorado and represent over 13,000 years of cultural history in the region. The collections are available to descendant communities, researchers, university students, and museums interested in Colorado pre-contact Native American history and early Euro-American history for visits, research, and artifact loans.
The National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE) Internship Program is a partnership with the National Park Service and other Federal agencies with cultural resource protection and public land management responsibilities. Its purpose is to accomplish needed and important work on federally protected lands while providing program participants with professional experience in their chosen fields. Interns work under the guidance of agency staff to complete projects or undertake programs in furtherance of the park’s mission.
To be eligible, applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old (or 35 if a veteran) when starting the internship, a college student or recent graduate (within the past 12 months at the time of application), enrolled in a degree-seeking program, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
The main duties of this position will be cataloging and repackaging Bureau of Land Management (BLM) collections housed at the Archaeology Repository at Colorado State University (AR-CSU) and entering collections into the Interior Collections Management System (ICMS) software. BLM collections housed at AR-CSU are mostly from northwestern Colorado, including the BLM Little Snake and White River Field Offices. They are primarily collections of stone tools, ceramics, animal bones, historic artifacts, and associated paper and visual records. The successful candidate will assist Repository personnel in inventorying past collections, clarifying and updating computer records on the collections, repackaging materials in new curatorial supplies, and reshelving the collections. Digital scanning of archival records will also be undertaken. The work is in a lab environment with data entry on lab computers.
The internship will be part- or full-time over the spring semester and potentially into the summer of 2026. Please specify your preference for part- or full-time work in the required essay.
A housing stipend is available. College credit (Anth486) may also be earned by the student during the internship. A background security investigation may be required prior to the start date. All NCPE interns accrue 4 hours of paid time off (PTO) for every 80 hours worked.
Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate. Once earned, the PLC certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal permanent, temporary, or term positions. Visit https://preservenet.org/ncpe-internships/ for details about this benefit. Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee Federal employment.
