The vast majority of archaeological collections held in the Archaeological Repository of Colorado State University are from Northern Colorado and represent over 13,000 years of cultural history in the region. The collections are available to descendant communities, researchers, university students, and museums interested in Colorado pre-contact Native American history and early Euro-American history for visits, research, and artifact loans.

The mission of the Archaeological Repository of Colorado State University (AR-CSU) is to curate and preserve archaeological collections and promote their educational, scientific, and cultural use to benefit a diverse public. The Repository manages the archaeological artifacts and associated paperwork and images of the Colorado State University’s Department of Anthropology and other archaeological collections from public and private lands in Colorado obtained in the course of cultural resource management (CRM) and field schools.

The main duties of this position will be cataloging and repackaging Bureau of Land Management (BLM) collections housed at the Repository and entering collections into the Interior Collections Management System (ICMS). BLM collections housed at AR-CSU are mostly from northwestern Colorado, including the BLM Little Snake and White River Field Offices, and include stone tools, ceramics, animal bones, historic artifacts, and associated paper and visual records. The intern will assist Repository personnel in inventorying past collections, clarifying and updating computer records on the collections, repackaging materials in new curatorial supplies, and re-shelving the collections. Digital scanning of archival records will also be undertaken. The work is in a lab environment with data entry on lab computers.

The internship can be part-time or full-time. Part-time applicants must work at least 12.5 hours a week for 16 weeks during the spring 2025 and fall 2025 semesters (400 hours total). Full-time applicants work a 40-hour week for 10 weeks in the spring 2025 semester. Please indicate your preference for a full- or part-time schedule in the required essay. A housing stipend of $3,000 is provided to the intern. College credit (Anth486) may also be earned by the intern if they are an enrolled student during the internship.

This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. The successful applicants must be 30 years of age or younger (or 35 years or younger if a Veteran) when they begin the internship. Other eligibility requirements apply; visit https://preservenet.org/ncpe-internships/ for details and instructions on how to apply.

Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.  Once earned, the PLC hiring authority certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal temporary, term, or permanent positions. Visit the website listed above for details about this benefit. Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee Federal employment.
