Job Qualifications:RESPONSIBILITIES
CEMML is looking for a self-directed and creative individual (accepting applications from recent graduates, entry-level, and experienced professionals) with a combined training and/or experience in historic preservation and architecture/engineering or construction management. A successful applicant will demonstrate creativity, exceptional organizational and analytical skills, and the ability to write clearly for multiple audiences with varying levels of technical expertise.
The Historic Preservation Technician will assist in the research and development of rehabilitation treatment guides for historic buildings and structures. Using readily available sources, including design specification templates; Secretary of the Interior Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties; and other standards/guidelines published by DoD, GSA, NPS, UFGS, and WBDG, the Historic Preservation Technician will develop a consolidated set of Treatments guides, updated to reflect current scholarship and A&E industry standards (e.g. tools & materials, step-by-step methodology, etc.), and present it in an accessible, user-friendly digital format (Adobe InDesign or comparable program) using graphics tools to enhance accessibility and readability; to include, but not limited to, adaptive layouts, images, tables, animations, highlights, and dynamic links.
The project shall include thorough research regarding common causes of deterioration in wood, iron/steel, stucco, brick, stone and concrete masonry elements; appropriate rehabilitation treatments for windows and doors, roofs, and foundations; and emerging repair technologies or devices. The Historic Preservation Technician will be independently responsible for developing treatment standards, under the direction of the cultural resources principal investigator and other CEMML research associates. Good communication skills are essential for written and oral reporting.
This is a Temporary Hourly position; a flexible work schedule, but with weekly check-in and other relevant meetings to be held via video conference. Telework and/or remote work schedule to be negotiated at the time of hire. Start and end dates are flexible and work will continue for 4-6 months.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Preservation Engineering, Architecture (Historic), Historic Preservation, Construction Management (repair and rehabilitation emphasis), Engineering (preservation or restoration emphasis), or closely related field.
- The successful candidate must demonstrate a broad knowledge of concepts, principles, and practices related to historic preservation and rehabilitation treatments, as gained through education and relevant job experience.
- Must be proficient with Adobe as well as Microsoft Office.
- Must be detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, self-motivated, resourceful, and proactive.
- Must be adaptable and comfortable working both collaboratively and independently.
- Must possess skills in graphic design and written communication sufficient to receive and convey information, communicate effectively with a diverse groups of people, and provide concise and thorough guidance.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s Degree in Preservation Engineering, Architecture (Historic), Historic Preservation, Construction Management (repair and rehabilitation emphasis), Engineering (preservation or restoration emphasis), or closely related field.
- Highly qualified candidates will demonstrate a solid understanding of historic building systems and materials.
- Knowledge and ability to read and comprehend design and construction specifications, as well as building plans.
- Ability to prioritize, manage, and carry out duties efficiently and within established timeframes is strongly desired.
- Preferred candidates will possess experience assessing historic buildings and structures to identify sources of deterioration.
- Preferred candidates will possess technical writing skills related to Historic Structures Reports (HSRs) and Rehabilitation Treatment Plans.
- Experience performing tasks under tight deadlines and managing shifting priorities is desirable.
- Demonstrated familiarity with investigative techniques (invasive and non-destructive testing) is useful, but not required.
