  • Job Summary: E2PM is currently seeking a Senior Architectural Historian to join its team and play a pivotal role in leading and overseeing a variety of complex, ongoing, and upcoming projects within the Cultural Resource Department.
  • Job Qualifications:
    • Master’s degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Architecture, or a closely related field; a PhD in a related field is a plus.
    • Minimum of 7-10 years of professional experience in architectural history, cultural resource management, or historic preservation, with at least 5 years of experience in a leadership or senior-level role.
    • Proven experience in leading and managing cultural resource projects from start to finish, including survey, evaluation, compliance, and reporting.
    • Expert knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Section 106 compliance, CEQA, NEPA, and other federal, state, and local historic preservation laws and regulations.
    • Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s (SOIs) Professional Qualifications in Architectural History.
    • Strong understanding of the SOI Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and their application in preservation and regulatory contexts.
    • Experience preparing and managing National Register of Historic Places nominations, HABS/HAER documentation, historic context studies, preservation plans, Tribal and
    • Interested Party consultations, FCC filings, and E-106 submissions.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor junior staff or consultants, providing guidance, training, and quality control for projects.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with clients, regulatory agencies, and preservation groups, with proven experience in Section 106 consultation and conflict resolution.
    • Exceptional report-writing and technical writing skills, with a history of producing high-quality, thorough, and accurate documentation.
    • Strong project management skills, including budget management, scheduling, and meeting deadlines while maintaining high-quality deliverables.
    • Familiarity with the use of GIS, CAD, and other architectural documentation tools is preferred.
    • Professional certifications or memberships, such as with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, American Cultural Resources Association (ACRA), or similar organizations, are highly desirable.
    • A proven track record of successfully managing multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines, and balancing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
    • Familiarity with emerging trends and best practices in the field of historic preservation, including sustainable preservation practices and technology-driven approaches.
    • Work well independently and as a team member, demonstrating the ability to manage tasks autonomously while collaborating effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure project success.
    • Have the flexibility to travel overnight for projects, including travel to various project sites across New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, as needed for fieldwork, site visits, and project meetings.
    • Possess a vehicle and valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

The Architectural Historian senior-level position requires a seasoned professional with extensive experience in architectural history and cultural resource management. The successful candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Section 106 regulations, FCC Programmatic Agreements, and the regulatory frameworks of various Historic Preservation Offices.

Responsibilities would include:

  • Lead and oversee historic architectural resource surveys and evaluations from start to finish, including background research, context development, field documentation, report writing, and survey form preparation in compliance with CEQA, NEPA, Section 106 of the NHPA, and applicable local requirements.
  • Evaluate historic architectural resources in relation to the NRHP criteria and within the framework of the historic and architectural contexts developed for each project.
  • Assess the effects of proposed undertakings on identified historic properties in accordance with the regulations found at 36 CFR Part 800, providing expert recommendations for managing potential impacts.
  • Develop strategies to eliminate, minimize, or mitigate adverse effects to historic properties, including working directly with clients to facilitate Section 106 consultation processes and resolve conflicts or issues.
  • Lead the development of historic preservation documents, including National Register nominations, state-level and HABS/HAER/HALS documentation, historic context studies, historic preservation plans, and other specialized reports and studies as assigned.
  • Assess CEQA impacts/Section 106 effects on historical resources and historic properties, considering federal, state, and local requirements, and provide expert guidance to clients on regulatory compliance.
  • Provide expert knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior’s (SOI) Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, ensuring their correct application in federal, state, and local regulatory settings.
  • Manage and oversee project budgets, ensuring that projects are completed within financial constraints, while maintaining high standards of quality and compliance.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage junior staff or consultants involved in cultural resource management, fostering a collaborative and effective working environment, and ensuring that project deliverables meet E2PM’s high standards.
  • Coordinate with project teams and external stakeholders, including clients, regulatory agencies, and preservation organizations, to ensure that all requirements and deadlines are met for each project.
