Website Great Basin Institute/National Park Service

The Great Basin Institute, founded at the University of Nevada, Reno in 1998, is a mission-driven non-profit organization headquartered in the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. GBI has been a leader in the conservation stewardship field for over two decades, supporting thousands of individuals pursuing a career in public land management or advancing their academic standing. In partnership with the NPS’ Alaska Regional Office, GBI seeks to hire one Historical Architect for a 15-month placement beginning in May of 2025 to help with implementation of a larger National Park Service-Alaska multidisciplinary project titled “Provide Critical Care to Cultural Resources at Risk in Alaska from Climate Change” that is funded by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

An overarching goal of this project is to provide opportunities for emerging cultural resource professionals to work side-by-side with National Park Service, Alaska Regional Office (AKRO) staff in accomplishing tasks related to cultural resources management with documenting resources that are critically threatened by the impacts of climate change.  Project participants will gain experience in Determination of Eligibility and condition assessment documentation process that may inform career goals and decisions and will otherwise enhance their understanding of NPS cultural resource mandates and heritage preservation initiatives.  Primary objectives of this project that will be implemented by the Historical Architect include, but are not limited to:

  •  Completing research and on-site inspections of buildings in the Western Arctic National Parklands to prepare consensus Determination for Eligibility forms for submission to the Alaska State Historic Preservation Office for review and concurrence.
  • Work will also include climate resiliency and condition assessment inspections with a team of architects, structural and civil engineers at the Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark in Wrangell St. Elias National Park and Preserve (WRST).
