  • Job Summary: The Development Director works with senior leadership to aggressively plan, lead and direct the organization and implementation of fundraising from individual, foundation, corporate and government sources.
  • Job Qualifications:

    The successful candidate will:

    1.  Have a background in the cultivation and solicitation of individual, corporate, foundation, and government donors, and a proven track record in the management of fundraising events and successful development programs, including staff and volunteer management. .

    2.  Understand and support the Historical Society’s mission, appreciate the important role cultural institutions play in the life of a vibrant community, and have the ability to articulate this mission and role to others.

    3.  Be someone with initiative, creativity, self-confidence, and energy, who enjoys working as a team player but also has the capability to work independently and as a self-starter.

    4.  Be a personable, positive, and social individual, with integrity and a sense of humor, who is able to work well with trustees, donors, volunteers and staff, and who enjoys taking an active, public role in the cultivation and solicitation of donors as well as in working behind the scenes.

    5.  Have excellent verbal and written communication skills, computer literacy and the ability to inspire those working with him/her toward accomplishing common objectives.

    6.  Be well-organized; able to manage strategically set priorities that serve the chosen strategies, yet have sufficient focus on details to assure effective implementation and follow through.

    7.  Be willing to work diligently and hands-on to get the job done, and with the flexibility necessary to balance the many challenges inherent in a changing, growing organization.

    8.   Have, at minimum, a Baccalaureate degree, and at least five years of development experience.

Founded 90 years ago as an organization devoted to collecting and interpreting the community’s history, the Greenwich Historical Society has evolved into a vital and growing campus with a nationally-significant historic site, an award-winning museum, and a multi-faceted range of programs and activities. Located on the historic Cos Cob Harbor, home of Connecticut's first art colony, the Historical Society has two main areas of focus: as a museum (galleries, Bush-Holley House, education center) with related exhibitions and education programs for children and adults, and as a center for Greenwich history (library and archives, preservation and publication programs). Its stated mission is to preserve and interpret Greenwich's history to strengthen the community’s connection to our past, to each other and to our future.

The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director & CEO, works closely with the Board and other organizational staff, and participates in several Board committees.

The Director of Development will lead our annual fundraising program and support our capital campaign.

1. Work with senior leadership to aggressively plan, lead and direct the organization and implementation of fundraising from individual, foundation, corporate and government sources to meet the operating, exhibition, collections, and education needs of the Historical Society for the present and the long term.  Key initiatives include: ongoing efforts to identify and expand corporate and foundation donors and sponsorships; increased identification and cultivation of individual donors, with particular focus on accessing new constituencies and funding sources; growth of the annual fund, major gifts and membership; and advancing a planned giving program.

2.  Work closely with staff, Board and volunteers to maximize the effectiveness of the Historical Society’s major fundraising events and other special events and activities, including its History in the Making Award Dinner, Spring Tour and its Greenwich Landmarks Event; and to help attract, cultivate, and retain donors and members, which includes establishing and overseeing the fulfillment of donor benefits and recognition.

3. Work with the Executive Director & CEO to motivate and strengthen the Board in its role in development; expand, manage and coordinate the Board and other volunteers’ involvement in fundraising activities; and take an active role in serving and supporting the Board as it continues to grow and develop.

4.  Cooperate with the Executive Director & CEO to prepare foundation, corporate and government grant proposals, and oversee grant administration and reporting.

5.  Train and supervise the Development Associate and support staff, and recruit and replace as necessary, in consultation with the Historical Society’s senior leadership.

6. Maintain the integrity and effectiveness of the Historical Society’s fundraising database, Raiser’s Edge; growing the staff’s competence to generate timely reports and lists.

7.  Work collaboratively with and serve as a resource to the Education, Exhibition, Collections, and Marketing departments in the design of marketable and fundable programs and help secure new sources of funds for these programs; foster ongoing, collegial communications among the development department and other departments of the organization and the board.

8. Team with the Executive Director & CEO, Marketing Director, Board and other staff to enhance the Historical Society’s public image and positioning, foster positive external relations, and build long-term strategic alliances, and play an active, public role as a representative of the organization.

9.  In conjunction with the Executive Director & CEO and the Finance Director, help prepare and manage the Development department’s financial reports and budget; monitor the development budget and control expenses, and oversee the administration of the development department, its procedures and policies.

    Benefits

    All NCPE interns received an hourly stipend, the rate is listed at each position description. Additionally, interns receive paid time off (PTO), paid Federal holidays if working full-time, and access to NCPE's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for career and personal counseling, coaching, and referrals. Project sites may also offer a housing allowance and/or commuting stipend; this information is also listed in the description or offered during the interview.

    As an organization operating under Public Land Corps Act (PLC) authority, many NCPE positions qualify the intern for Federal Hiring Preference if (1) they complete a minimum of 640 hours at one or more qualifying conservation project(s); (2) are between the ages of 16 and 30 years (35 if a veteran); and (3) apply for a Federal position at USAJOBS with PLC noted in the announcement within two years of completing the internship.     Eligibility

    To be eligible, applicants must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking academic program or recently graduated (within the past 12 months) and be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident. Interns are not eligible to work more than 1200 hours total in the program; previous interns must stay within this overall limit. The length of an internship can vary from 10 to 30 weeks if full time (40 hours per week) or longer if on a part-time schedule. If selected, the exact starting date will be determined by you and the NPS supervisor. The stipend rate is $17.00 per hour unless otherwise listed.

    The successful candidate is responsible for finding and paying for travel to and housing at the internship location; some exceptions apply. The supervising office may be able to assist in locating housing but it is ultimately up to the individual accepting the internship to find accommodation.

    The National Council requires all interns working in-person at Federal facilities and/or with Federal employees receive the Covid-19 vaccination. Please be advised that you may also be required to wear a mask, depending on the protocols adopted by your work site. Also be aware that, due to Government-wide security requirements, a background check will be required if you are selected for a position. This will include providing information about recent housing and employment history. The position supervisor will have more information about these requirements and procedures at the time of hiring.     Please note that interns are not NCPE or NPS employees. Stipends are academic awards and taxes are not withheld, nor are social security contributions made on your behalf. These funds may be taxable, however, so consult a tax preparation professional if you have questions.

Use the search function to find listings by location, keyword, or area of interest/category. Once you identify one or more positions of interest, there is a 3-step application process.

    Step 2: The Universal Application is required to apply for all NCPE internships. You fill out this form only once. In addition to contact information, educational status, work history, and experience, it requires two attachments: (1) the 2 most recent years of academic transcripts. These may be unofficial transcripts if official versions are unavailable. PDF only, labeled Your Last Name_Your First Name_Transcript. (2) a resume or CV (curriculum vitae). Please limit to a maximum of 4 pages; 2 pages preferred. May be .doc, .docx or PDF. Label Your Last Name_Your First Name_Resume. This form may be saved as a draft and completed later. Use the link provided to return to the form.

    Step 3: Once you submit the Universal Application, you may browse and apply for NCPE internships using the link provided. Complete the application process by clicking on the Apply for job button found at each internship listing and upload the required Essay. Use the essay to explain why you are applying for an internship, including how your interest areas will benefit the National Park Service (NPS) and how the internship will further your studies and career goals. Be as specific as possible; there is a 400-word maximum length. Submit the essay to finish the application for that position. You may apply for a maximum of 6 internships during this application round. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!

    Once the deadline for submission has passed, NPS supervisors will review the applications and may contact candidates for a phone interview. Candidates who are not selected will be notified. Please allow about 4 weeks after the deadline before inquiring about the status of your application.
