  • Job Qualifications:

    Minimal requirements
    ·         Candidates must reside or be willing to relocate to New York’s Capital District region.

    ·         Meet the minimum qualifications specified in Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Architectural History (36 CFR Part 61).

    ·         Strong technical writing, graphic and verbal communication skills.

    ·         Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, both in person and remotely.

    ·         Strong time management skills and the ability to accomplish tasks in a timely manner.

    ·         Ability to solve unexpected problems.

    ·         Availability to travel to field projects with hotel stays during the work week as needed.

    ·         Possession of a valid U.S. driver’s license.

    Preferred qualifications
    ·         A working understanding of historic preservation law, particularly Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, environmental review processes and requirements.

    ·         Knowledge of the history of the Northeast including CT, MA, NH, NJ, NY, PA, ME and VT.

    ·         Experience with digital data collection methods and field technology (GPS units, tablets, cameras).

    ·         An interest in continuing personal education and engagement with the field.

    ·         Skill, experience and/or interest in field documentation and drawing of standing buildings and structures and architectural features in archeological contexts

    ·         Prior experience working in the CRM field.

Hartgen seeks motivated candidates for an entry level Architectural Historian to participate in historic resource investigations undertaken in compliance with federal and state historic preservation laws and regulations for a range of public and private sector clients. The position will entail work on projects throughout the Northeast, the greatest number being in New York. The successful applicant will possess an aptitude for history, strong communication skills, and an openness to learn field documentation methods for buildings and other structures.

Job responsibilities
·         Contribute to reconnaissance- and intensive-level historic resource surveys to identify and evaluate National Register eligible properties. Support structure documentation (e. g. HABS/HAER or similar), and completion of cultural landscape reports, historic property management plans, and other report types. Author portions of these reports and propose interpretations of components of historical archeological sites.

·         Participate in architectural fieldwork, work with survey technicians, conduct/coordinate research, communicate with clients, and consult with SHPO and other agency personnel.

·         Understand and comply with safe work practices.

·         Ensure that all work and data collected are accurate, organized, and of high quality.

·         Work with the Senior Architectural Historian to plan and execute projects within project scoping, timelines, and budgets.

·         Support the work of the Senior Architectural Historian and other project personnel, including archeologists, researchers, GIS specialists, and subconsultants.
