    THE CANDIDATE

    Experience and qualities of the idea candidate are set out below:

    • Degree in Historic Preservation, History, Architecture, Planning or related field
    • At least two years historic preservation experience, including grant writing, grant management, and cultural resource survey (preferably experience with context-based multiple-property based approach)
    • Experience in the administration of large award grant funded projects
    • Experience presenting to large groups and public speaking
    • Excellent writing, communication, planning and organizational skills, including presentation skills
    • Experience in leading multidisciplinary teams
    • Mid-level competency in Microsoft Excel, GIS software, and data analysis
    • Knowledge of and/or interest in Denver history and architecture
    • Ability to attend evening and weekend meetings or workshops and travel to locations within the City of Denver

  • Physical Demands / Work Environment: This is a full-time salaried position requiring no less than 40 hours per week. Work takes place both in the office and out in the community. Occasional weekends, early morning, and evening work is required. Physical Requirements Works requires some physical exertion such as walking, standing, lifting, carrying or similar activities. This work requires walking or standing to a significant degree. This position requires using multiple flights of stairs to a significant degree.

Website Historic Denver

Historic Denver is the foremost voice advocating for Denver’s historic and cultural assets, working every day to promote and protect Denver’s historic places and spaces and the stories they tell about Denver’s diverse residents and communities. In addition to owning and operating the Molly Brown House Museum, Historic Denver conducts educational programming and events, leads walking tours, provides technical assistance to owners of historic properties, and holds preservation easements on more than 70 of Denver’s most beloved buildings. Historic Denver also works in partnership with the City and County of Denver to administer the Discover Denver program, a city-wide survey focusing on identifying the buildings that are important to the city’s history and communities.

The Director of Research and Discover Denver will lead the Discover Denver program and be a key member of Historic Denver’s Preservation Team. This role plays a crucial part in managing grant partnerships with multiple stakeholders and will monitor the success and effectiveness of all aspects of the Discover Denver program. The Director of Research and Discover Denver will also be a key voice in Historic Denver’s mission to thoughtfully and creatively advocate for historic places and serve as a resource for solving challenging preservation dilemmas.

THE ROLE

Discover Denver

  • Manage the grant-funded Discover Denver citywide building survey program and associated partnerships
  • Supervise survey and research staff and set strategic and tactical priorities for the team
  • Write applications for and manage grants and budgets related to Discover Denver, including State Historical Fund grants
  • Oversee the work of professional consultants providing historic preservation services
  • Generate detailed reports for survey areas, outlining results and recommendations
  • Lead outreach efforts in survey areas, including presentation development, planning of public events, and collaboration with residents and community organizations
  • Develop marketing and communication materials related to Discover Denver
  • Collaborate with City and County of Denver staff to ensure compatibility and integration of survey information with city records
  • Evaluate survey methodologies and implement changes as needed to ensure best practices
  • Manage content for the Discover Denver website

Preservation Advocacy and Research

This role is part of Historic Denver’s Preservation Team and will participate in identifying preservation and policy initiatives that are important to the overall organization, including:

  • Research preservation issues specific to projects identified by the preservation team
  • Respond to research and designation inquiries and advise interested parties
  • Serve as an organizational spokesperson on preservation matters as needed
  • Other duties as identified as important to Preservation, Discover Denver, and the overall organizational effectiveness of Historic Denver

COMPENSATION

Historic Denver will offer the successful candidate a competitive salary within the range of $55,000 to $65,000. The successful candidate will also be eligible for retirement and healthcare benefits, paid vacation and sick leave, and an employee-match SIMPLE IRA plan after year one.

This role is primarily funded through a Colorado State Historical Fund grant. Funding for the Discover Denver project has been approved continuously since the program was initiated in 2012. Funding for the project is currently in place through fall 2026, with plans to apply in late-2025 for future grant funding.
