🔗Historic Preservation Project Specialist

Website Historic Ketchikan
Ketchikan sprang to life in the late 1800s spurred by the discovery of gold and the development of the fishing and lumber industries. The town’s founders decided that Ketchikan would be “built to last” and many masonry buildings and handsome wood commercial and residential buildings were constructed in the first decades of the 20th century. Our heritage includes four historic districts (three on the National Register), a wealth of handsome commercial buildings, many early wood residences, wood staircases and boardwalks, and a world class, active waterfront. Ketchikan is also a destination for visitors from around the world. Historic Ketchikan, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization formed in 1991 to promote Ketchikan’s economy through historic preservation and heritage tourism. Historic Ketchikan has provided comprehensive downtown revitalization services since its beginning and has assisted over 150 property owners with design services.
The Historic Preservation Project Specialist reports to the Executive Director and works in a collaborative team environment with other professionals and the Historic Ketchikan Board of Directors. The Project Specialist will:
• Assist in the development of strategies for historic district revitalization.
• Conduct public awareness and education programs to enhance appreciation of historic architecture and other heritage assets and to foster an understanding of Historic Ketchikan’s goals and objectives. Use speaking engagements, media interviews, personal appearances and web site development to keep the program in the public eye.
• Assist individual property owners with design of historic preservation projects through personal consultation or by obtaining professional design consultants; locating appropriate contractors and materials; and providing advice on financing opportunities.
• Assist important historic preservation and economic development planning projects such as Historic Ketchikan’s planning of the waterfront boardwalk, restoration of the historic Yates Memorial Hospital, revitalizing the Newtown/Hopkins Alley area, etc.
• Develop a close working relationship with the City of Ketchikan and the Ketchikan Gateway Borough to ensure that all aspects of revitalization and historic preservation efforts are compatible with the goals and objectives of the local governments.
• Encourage design excellence in all aspects of community development and historic preservation.
