🔗Research and Design Fellow- Cultural Landscape

Website Historic New England
Historic New England is the oldest and largest regional heritage organization in the nation. We engage diverse audiences in developing a deeper understanding and enjoyment of New England home life by being the national leader in collecting, preserving, and using significant buildings, landscapes, archives, stories, and objects from the past to today.
The Historic New England Research and Design, Cultural Landscape fellowship is an opportunity to research a historic landscape, develop restoration plans, and consider how to sensitively add visitor improvements.
This year’s focus will be on the Hamilton House landscape. In the 1990s, historical research was compiled for Hamilton House and restoration plans for the gardens were developed for the property. While many of the recommendations were implemented, Historic New England is interested in revisiting the research, assessing what progress towards the recommendations is complete, and developing plans to continue the restoration of the garden. This work will incorporate more recent thinking about the gardens and their use including the findings of a landscape accessibility feasibility analysis completed in 2024.
This 24 hour per week opportunity, limited to a term of nine months to begin on October 1, 2024, is open to those pursuing a career in fields related to landscape architecture, architecture, engineering, design, and historic preservation. Work is remote-based with occasional travel to Historic New England’s Hamilton House required along with travel to any archives, libraries, and other repositories as needed. A laptop and necessary software will be provided, travel undertaken for this position will be reimbursed, and office space is available at the Sarah Orne Jewett House if so desired.
Responsibilities:
- Review the historical record of the gardens at Hamilton House, including (but not limited to) published reports, primary documentation, and the 1990s garden restoration plan.
- Identify and document the progress made since the 1990s plan and develop updated recommendations for the restoration of the garden.
- Design drawings including, but not limited to, scaled drawings of the pergola and garden structures based on historic documentation suitable for construction; concept drawings for accessibility of proposed visitor center and gardens; concept drawings for museum access. As time allows develop construction-ready drawings.
- Other duties and special projects as assigned to support organizational goals and objectives.
