🔗Emery Archaeology Laboratory & Collections Internship

Established in 1879, History Colorado is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and an agency of the State of Colorado under the Department of Higher Education. We are committed to serving all Coloradans and offer access to our state’s history through enriching experiences at eleven museums and historic sites, with dynamic and relevant exhibits and activities. We steward about 15 million objects, photographs, and archival resources that make up the State’s collection, and serve tens of thousands of learners of all ages through dynamic programs. We work with school groups and youth through field trips, day camps, and traveling programs across the state of Colorado. We’re home to a free public research center, Colorado’s Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP), and the Colorado State Historical Fund (SHF), the nation’s largest preservation program of its kind.
Broad Scope of Position: This internship will provide students with hands-on training in the identification and handling of a wide range of archaeological materials and with experience in the application of professional standards for the long-term preservation of those materials. If desired, this internship will also provide students with experience in research design utilizing legacy collections and with the preparation of publication and/or presentation of research to public and academic audiences. Interns will:
Gain experience in applying professional standards and best practices for archaeological collections management, including cataloging, labeling, and inventorying procedures
Learn to identify and assess the condition of archaeological materials
Develop skills in handling, documenting, and rehousing a variety of archaeological materials.
If desired, these tasks may be coordinated with a small-scale research project tailored to the intern’s interest.
Outcomes: The overall goal is to provide an intern with practical experience in archaeological collections management and curation, with a focus on rehousing legacy collections in the Emery Archaeology Laboratory.
