  • Job Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications:

    A bachelor’s degree in an applicable field (architectural history, historic preservation, or a related field) from an accredited college or university, a driver’s license.

    Several possible levels are available at hiring, depending on qualifications:

    Environmental Specialist – one year of applicable experience

    Senior Environmental Specialist – three years of applicable experience one year of experience must have included responsibility for managing projects and/or providing leadership to other professional or technical staff.

    Senior Environmental Specialist II – four years of applicable experience as described.

    Applicants may substitute an applicable advanced education degree for up to two years of experience.  Applicants will be hired at a level commensurate with their applicable experience.

    Annual Salary Range:

    Environmental Specialist $50,000 – $60,000

    Senior Environmental Specialist $55,000 – $65,000

    Senior Environmental Specialist II $60,000 – $75,000

MES was established by the General Assembly in 1970 to assist with the preservation, improvement, and management of the quality of air, land, water, and natural resources, and to promote the health and welfare of the citizens of the State. Today, MES employs over 800 teammates and operates more than 1,000 environmental projects across Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic Region. As a not-for-profit business unit of the state of Maryland, MES provides multi-disciplinary environmental compliance services to enhance and protect the environment through innovative solutions to the region’s most complex environmental challenges.

The Maryland Environmental Service has an opening in the Technical and Environmental Services Group for an Architectural Historian (classification is Environmental Specialist). The architectural historian will work in a collaborative environment with a team of architectural historians and archaeologists in the Cultural Resources Section at the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland. Responsibilities focus on ensuring SHA projects are compliant with federal and state cultural resources laws and regulations.

 

The Architectural Historian will prepare cultural resources assessments and compliance documents for transportation projects throughout Maryland. Duties include conducting architectural surveys, evaluating resources for National Register of Historic Places eligibility, preparing historic context studies, and developing mitigation. Additional responsibilities include preparing requests for proposals and directing and reviewing consultant tasks. Opportunities are available to direct special initiatives, conduct research studies, and participate in training programs that benefit the Cultural Resources Section and enhance project compliance. Candidates must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Architectural History. Preferred candidates will have experience in Mid-Atlantic architectural history and transportation agency projects.
