    • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
    • Experience conducting research and synthesizing information from multiple sources.
    • Coursework or experience related to American history, public history, cultural resources, environmental studies, or natural resource management.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
    • Interest in the mission and work of the National Park Service.
    • Valid driver’s license.

Website National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program

Amache National Historic Site preserves the site of the former Granada Relocation Center, one of ten incarceration camps established by the United States during World War II, where more than 10,000 Japanese Americans were unjustly confined. Located near Granada, CO, the park protects historic features, archaeological resources, reconstructed structures, and cultural landscapes that help tell the story of incarceration, resilience, military service, community, and the ongoing importance of civil rights and constitutional protections. Through preservation, research, interpretation, and partnerships with survivors, descendants, and local communities, the site serves as a place for reflection, education, and remembrance.

The National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE)’s Internship Program is a partnership with the National Park Service and other Federal agencies responsible for cultural resource protection and public land management. The program’s purpose is to accomplish needed and important work on federally protected lands while providing participants with professional experience in their chosen fields. Interns work under the guidance of agency staff who are subject area experts to carry out the mission of the park.

To be eligible, applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old (or 35 if a veteran) when starting the internship, a post-secondary student (certificate program, 2-year, 4-year, or graduate level), or a recent graduate (within the past 12 months at the time of application), and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.  

Amache National Historic Site, located near Granada, Colorado, preserves the former Granada Relocation Center and commemorates the experiences of Japanese Americans incarcerated during World War II. The park works closely with descendants, local communities, researchers, and partner organizations to preserve and share this nationally significant history.

The intern will work directly with National Park Service staff to support visitor services, interpretation, education, and resource stewardship activities. Daily duties will focus on engaging visitors and helping them connect with the stories, places, and people that make Amache a powerful place of remembrance and learning.

Primary responsibilities include:

Greet visitors and provide orientation to the park and its resources.
Staff visitor contact locations and answer visitor questions.
Lead guided tours of the historic site.
Present formal and informal interpretive programs.
Assist with educational activities, special events, and community outreach efforts.
Research historical topics using primary and secondary sources to support visitor programs.
Assist with the development of interpretive materials and visitor information.

Additional opportunities may include:

Mount and catalog voucher specimens as part of ongoing inventory and monitoring efforts.
Support cultural landscape, historical research, or resource management projects.
Contribute to digital content, exhibits, or educational resources.

The intern will gain valuable experience in public speaking, visitor engagement, interpretation, historical research, park operations, and resource stewardship while working alongside National Park Service professionals.

This position has a housing and commuting stipend, is in-person, and is based at the Amache Museum in southeastern Colorado. A background security investigation may be required prior to the start date. All NCPE interns accrue 4 hours of paid time off (PTO) for every 80 hours worked.

Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.  Once earned, the PLC certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal permanent, temporary, or term positions.
