🔗Fire and Fuels Management Cultural Resources Intern – 640 hours

Website National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program
The boundary of Crater Lake National Park protects most of what remains of Mount Mazama, an ancient volcano that once loomed around 12,000 feet skyward, amongst the tallest in the Cascade Mountain Range. A rapid series of explosive eruptions around 7,700 years ago caused the cataclysmic emptying of Mount Mazama and the inward collapse of its structure. This resulted in one of the most spectacular calderas in the world—a 6-mile by 5-mile basin and Crater Lake, which at its deepest reaches 1943 feet, the deepest in the United States. Designated a national park in 1902, it is the fifth oldest national park in the United States and the only one in Oregon.
Wildland fire is the most significant natural process currently shaping the southern Cascade Mountain ecosystems. Virtually all vegetation communities show evidence of fire dependence or tolerance. Recent data shows that an average of 16 fires occur per year within the park. CRLA maintains a balanced ecosystem and forest health with a variety of fuel management programs.
The successful candidate will support the cultural branch of Integrated Resources and Fire while working in a cultural lead position to meet compliance needs for ongoing and future fuel management projects. Duties may include assisting with pre-field record searches, surveying new areas of the park, monitoring fuel break construction around archaeological sites, assisting with preparing final site forms and reports, and archiving project materials. The position will be duty stationed at Crater Lake National Park with in-park housing provided.
This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. The successful applicants must be 30 years of age or younger (or 35 years or younger if a Veteran) when they begin the internship. Other eligibility requirements apply; visit https://preservenet.org/ncpe-internships/ for details and instructions on how to apply.
Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate. Once earned, the PLC hiring authority certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal temporary, term, or permanent positions. Visit the website listed above for details about this benefit. Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee Federal employment.
