The Public Buildings Service (PBS) supports a productive federal workforce by providing financially and environmentally sustainable, accessible, and responsive workspace solutions. The Southeast Sunbelt Region currently manages over 140 federally-owned facilities and leases space in over 1,300 commercially-owned facilities, totaling almost 45 million rentable square feet. We have over 500 employees across eight southeastern states, and we are seeking energetic and dedicated public servants to join our team.

This internship will be based in the General Services Administration (GSA)’s Southeast Sunbelt Region, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The Fine Arts Specialist Intern will work directly with the Regional Historic Preservation and Fine Arts Officer and other specialists to ensure the accessibility, preservation, and appropriate use of the region’s fine arts collection. Our collection of 115 art installations includes murals, sculptures, and other historic artworks located in the region’s 87 historic buildings. The collection includes artwork produced by New Deal programs, as well as earlier and later commissioned public works of art that enhance the architecture of newer Federal buildings.

The intern will perform collections management functions such as the following:

  • Work to digitize archival hard-copy files per the existing finding aid
  • Organize the Fine Art’s collection of physical files and maquettes
  • Assist with the 2024 biennial Fine Arts inspections
  • Assist with the management of ongoing Art-in-Architecture projects (new art commissions associated with new construction projects)
  • Research and develop interpretive information about regional artists and artworks
  • Document the Region’s artwork (cataloguing and photography)
  • Work with GSA’s Center for Fine Arts Collections Management Database

This will be a hybrid position including a mix of on-site work in the Atlanta office, telework (from the intern’s home or other approved location), and occasional site visits to nearby Federal buildings. Telework / remote work requires Internet access provided by the intern. GSA will supply a laptop and access to GSA’s network. The internship can be full or part-time (negotiable) and may be extended beyond 400 hours, pending the availability of funds.

This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. The successful applicant(s) must be 30 years of age or younger (or 35 years or younger if a Veteran) when beginning the internship. Other eligibility requirements apply; visit https://preservenet.org/ncpe-internships/ for details and instructions on how to apply.
