Chaco Culture National Historical Park and Aztec Ruins National Monument are co-managed National Park units and comprise a single UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting Ancestral Pueblo great house communities. Both parks highlight the Chacoan great house culture that thrived in the Four Corners Region between roughly A.D. 900 and 1200.

The intern will assist the Aztec Ruins National Monument and Chaco Culture National Historical Park Tribal Liaison in maintaining documentation, developing a tracking system, and writing draft guidelines for tribal consultations related to both national parks.

The successful candidate will be supervised by the parks’ Supervisory Archeologist/Tribal Liaison and will work with several park staff, including the Archivist, Museum Curator, and the Eastern Four Corners Group Tribal Liaison. The two parks regularly consult with 28 Pueblos and Tribes. Duties will include but are not limited to: 1) research and compile (paper and digital) over 40 years of tribal consultations and correspondences into a well-organized reference system; 2) develop, populate, and maintain an Excel spreadsheet(s) to formally track consultations and correspondences; 3) assist park Tribal Liaison in ongoing consultations by scanning documentation, mailing (hard copy) tribal consultation letters and packets, and tracking correspondence; and 4) develop a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) document to guide the parks’ consultation process and documentation into the future. Upcoming consultation issues include Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) compliance, various natural and cultural resource projects, museum exhibits, and facilities projects.  The intern will gain training and experience in records management, government-to-government consultations, and tribal engagement.

This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE.
