National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program

The National Park Service (NPS) Northeast Region seeks a student or recent graduate with an education in applied cultural anthropology to support the region’s Tribal and Cultural Affairs program. Individuals working towards a Master’s degree in an ethnographic field may also apply.

Primary duties include distilling data from ethnographic reports and regional files into inventory entries, interviewing park Cultural Resource staff to assess the resource needs of their traditionally associated groups, and entering data into the Cultural Resources Inventory System (CRIS) Ethnographic Resource database. Secondary duties include developing protocols and templates for systematizing workflows, identifying source material for CRIS-ER entries beyond the typical range of NPS ethnographic reports, and offering guidance to park staff on how ethnographic data may inform park functioning. Additional work includes supporting the Tribal and Cultural Affairs program’s projects and goals; attending consultation meetings with Native Nations and other traditionally associated groups; and updating tribal contact information and areas of interest for future collaborations.

The work of the intern is critical to the development of co-stewardship guidance, and further duties may be developed and pursued in accordance with the intern’s special areas of interest and expertise. This internship can be completed remotely and covers 1000 hours of work at a rate of $25.00/hour. A housing stipend is also available. Ideally, work would begin as soon as possible, but the timeline is flexible for the right candidate.

This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. The successful applicant(s) must be 30 years of age or younger (or 35 years or younger if a Veteran) when beginning the internship. Other eligibility requirements apply; visit https://preservenet.org/ncpe-internships/ for details and instructions on how to apply.

Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.  Once earned, the PLC hiring authority certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal temporary, term, or permanent positions. Visit the website listed above for details about this benefit. Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee Federal employment.
