Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) is recognized as the founder of American landscape architecture and the nation's foremost park-maker. Olmsted moved his home to suburban Boston in 1883 and established the world's first full-scale professional office for the practice of landscape design. During the next century, his sons and successors perpetuated Olmsted's design ideals, philosophy, and influence.
Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site seeks a Stewardship Education Intern to help launch a new curriculum-based education program that engages local fourth-grade students and teachers in Boston, Massachusetts. This multifaceted new program initiative involves three touchpoints: a visit to Franklin Park, a virtual workshop exploring park archives, and an in-class lesson on park stewardship. Through these activities, students will gain insights into the theories and goals of landscape architecture pioneered by Frederick Law Olmsted and develop critical thinking skills related to landscape design, park utilization, and community stewardship.
The Stewardship Education Intern will:
- Present in-park and offsite curriculum-based education programs
- Create program flyers and promotional materials
- Contribute to the creation of programming materials such as student worksheets
- Participate in educator brainstorming and roundtables
- Provide admirative support during the programming period
The intern will work under the supervision of a Training Specialist and alongside the Education and Interpretive team at Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site in Brookline, Massachusetts. This position is part-time, in person, 16 hours per week for 24 weeks, a total of 384 hours. A monthly travel stipend and training stipend are included.
This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. The successful applicants must be 30 years of age or younger (or 35 years or younger if a Veteran) when they begin the internship. Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.
