The Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) is dedicated to the safe preservation and maintenance of national parks or partner facilities by demonstrating outstanding leadership, delivering quality preservation services, and developing educational courses that fulfill the competency requirements of service employees in the career fields of Historic Preservation Skills, Risk Management, Maintenance, and Planning, Design, and Construction. The HPTC utilizes historic preservation projects as the main vehicle for teaching preservation philosophy and building crafts, technology, and project management skills. Our experiential learning approach emphasizes flexibility in addressing the unknown conditions encountered during the project and ensures that the goals of preservation are met.

The Historic Preservation Training Center – located in Frederick, MD, within the boundary of Monocacy National Battlefield -provides planning, management, and day-labor services for preservation and maintenance projects through the national park system. The successful candidate will work with the HPTC Architecture Section to complete condition assessments, documentation, and/or design for historic structures. This is an in-person internship, with no option for remote work; telework can be negotiated.

Projects for the section vary and include historic structure reports (HSRs), documentation drawings, accessibility studies, compliance reviews, condition assessments, rapid assessment-style reports, etc., under the supervision of the Architecture Section Manager or other staff historical architects. Duties for the subject project will include field inspection/assessment, historic fabric investigation, field documentation, limited archival research, and composing treatment recommendations. Field work is completed with weather in mind but could occur in cold or hot temperatures with precipitation in the local commuting area. Office work is completed indoors in the historic Gambrill House at Monocacy National Battlefield.

For those seeking architectural licensure, this internship may count toward the NCARB Architectural Experience Program (AXP) system and could allow candidate(s) to gain experience working with a practicing licensed architect. Other HPTC Architecture Section employees are actively working toward the AXP completion or are working toward completing the Architect Registration Examinations (AREs).

This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. The successful applicants must be 30 years of age or younger (or 35 years or younger if a Veteran) when they begin the internship. Other eligibility requirements apply; visit https://preservenet.org/ncpe-internships/ for details and instructions on how to apply.

Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.  Once earned, the PLC hiring authority certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal temporary, term, or permanent positions. Visit the website listed above for details about this benefit. Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee Federal employment.
