Badlands National Park is located in a remote area of west-central South Dakota and consists of two units totaling 242,756 acres. The North Unit includes the 64,250-acre Badlands Wilderness Area. The South Unit is within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and is managed by the National Park Service in cooperation with the Oglala Sioux Tribe. The museum collection includes natural history specimens and cultural resources. The cultural collection includes archeological and historical resources related to the last 12,000 years of human presence in the Badlands. The natural history collection is a representative sample of the park flora and fauna, structures from geologic formations in the park and the largest paleontology collection in the NPS.

The rugged beauty of the Badlands draws visitors from around the world. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world’s richest fossil beds. Ancient horses and rhinos once roamed here. The park’s 243,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets live today. In addition, Badlands National Park contains a wide variety of museum collections, over 360,000 objects that tell the story of the park’s past and present. These objects relate to art, history, ethnology, biology, paleontology, and more. The successful candidate will work with park staff to research the collections to learn more about the Badlands and share their discoveries with the public.

The intern will work directly with BADL’s Museum Curator to meet National Park Service (NPS) curation standards for managing museum collections. The intern will be responsible for a variety of projects including processing and cataloging museum collections, receiving training on the Museum Collection Management System, reconciling accession and cataloging data, and conducting museum inventories. Other duties include re-housing museum records and archival materials, fulfilling research requests when available, assisting curatorial staff in regular housekeeping and environmental monitoring, and other projects as assigned. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or graduate student with a background in museum studies or collections management.

Transportation is the intern’s responsibility. Housing may be available. A housing allowance is included.

This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE.
