🔗Archaeology/Natural History Collections Management Intern – 400 hours
Website National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program
Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve encompasses over 46,000 acres of coastal saltmarsh habitat and over 12,000 years of human history along the St Johns and Nassau Rivers in Northeast Florida. In addition to outdoor recreation, visitors can explore local history at Fort Caroline National Memorial, Kingsley Plantation, and American Beach.
The National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE)’s Internship Program is a partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) and other Federal agencies with cultural resource protection and public land management responsibilities. The purpose of the program is to accomplish needed and important work on federally protected lands while providing program participants with professional experience in their chosen fields. Interns work under the guidance of agency staff who are subject area experts to carry out the mission of the park.
To be eligible, applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old (or 35 if a veteran) when starting the internship, a college student or recent graduate (within the past 12 months at the time of application), enrolled in a degree-seeking program, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
The successful candidate will be based at the Timucuan Preserve Headquarters and work with collections from Timucuan Preserve, Fort Caroline National Memorial, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, and Fort Matanzas National Monument. The intern will be supervised by the Museum Curator and work alongside the Museum Technician and Resource Division staff.
The intern will assist Museum staff with archaeology and natural history collections management projects. The Intern can work on projects in both disciplines or focus on one discipline. The primary projects are:
- Rehouse 7,000 metal artifacts into humidity-controlled microclimates and flag artifacts in need of conservation treatment.
- Review previously issued natural resource research permits to ensure all deliverables (data, reports, specimens) are accounted for and contact researchers and collections repositories as necessary.
The intern will learn about challenges in curating archaeology and natural history collections and gain exposure to NPS museum standards and documentation. Additional duties include assisting with environmental/pest monitoring. Other tasks may involve developing temporary exhibits, updating museum collection information on the park website, and assisting with research requests. There will be opportunities for NPS museum trainings, visiting neighboring parks, and conducting field work with Resource Division staff.
One (1) 400-hour internship is available, with the possibility of extension. Park housing is provided. The intern will need a personal vehicle. A completed background security investigation is required prior to the start date. All NCPE internships accrue 4 hours of PTO for every 80 hours worked.
Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate. Once earned, the PLC certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal permanent, temporary, or term positions. Visit https://preservenet.org/ncpe-internships/ for details about this benefit. Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee Federal employment.
