Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park is the sacred homeland to the Muscogee people. The park’s archeology spans 12,000 years encompassing indigenous and post-removal occupations. The Muscogee people were forcibly removed from the Macon plateau in the early 19th-century but still return to experience the landscape of their ancestors. Situated along the Ocmulgee River, the park includes both floodplain and upland forests. Mississippian mounds are the most prominent cultural features on the landscape. The city of Macon’s downtown is visible from the summit of the Great Temple Mound. A trail system allows visitors to explore the vegetation and wildlife of the wetland and upland environments.

Under the direction of the Park Archeologist, lead a two-person archeological crew for a systematic shovel test pit survey of newly acquired parklands. Primarily, this is a full-time field position with some rain-day office work. The Crew Lead will dig and screen shovel test pits with the Crew Member. The team will identify and make controlled collections of cultural material. The Crew Lead will maintain field equipment, review field methodologies, the NAGPRA Plan of Action, and job hazards with the crew, and maintain field records. The Crew Lead will review survey forms and unit photos in the field. In addition to survey form and photo log maintenance, the Crew Leader will oversee the collection of GPS/GIS data in the field. Attention to detail, organization, and spatial data control is required for the position. The Crew Lead will assist with pre-fieldwork preparation and planning and post-fieldwork report preparation. Two Crew Leaders will be hired for the Winter/Spring season beginning in early March 2025.
