Website National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program
NCPTT is a research and education center dedicated to advancing the field of historic preservation through the use of science and technology. We are part of the National Park Service's Cultural Resources, Partnerships and Science Directorate. Our research and educational programs focus on a wide range of topics, including materials conservation, architectural conservation, archeology, and cultural landscapes.
It has been 30 years since the founding of the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT). The present facilities have not radically changed since The Center was envisioned. This internship project will review NCPTT’s facilities and reimagine how those facilities can be consolidated and utilized to best serve NCPTT’s mission, its university partner, and the local community for the next 30 years.
The Digital Heritage Intern will work with NCPTT’s Building and Landscapes Department, and a team of interns, to investigate how the facilities can be adaptively reused. Special focus will be given to a preselected building. The team will scan the building using a FARO Focus S laser scanner. The Digital Heritage Intern will scan and process the digital data for the building.
The internship team will create an adaptive reuse plan to present to NCPTT and its university partner with recommendations based on their investigation and findings. Students will work with NCPTT staff and partners to discuss NCPTT’s mission and future needs. Students will utilize scans of present and proposed facilities to develop CAD drawings and investigate how facilities can be adapted to best meet the needs for NCPTT and its partner for the next 30 years.
This project will be a mix of field work and office work at NCPTT, and on the Northwestern State University campus in Natchitoches, LA. Housing is not included; however low-cost housing is available.
The Digital Heritage Intern will complete the internship with the following products: processed digital scan of a campus building and an innovative adaptive reuse plan created in partnership with the internship team.
