Website National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program
The Bureau of Land Management's mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. From spectacular red-rock canyons and roaring rivers to high mountain peaks and expansive salt flats across 22.8 million acres in Utah, BLM public lands are unparalleled in scenic beauty.
The National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE)’s Internship Program is a partnership with the National Park Service and other Federal agencies with cultural resource protection and public land management responsibilities. Its purpose is to accomplish needed and important work on federally protected lands while providing program participants with professional experience in their chosen fields. Interns work under the guidance of agency staff to complete projects or undertake programs in furtherance of the park’s mission.
To be eligible, applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old (or 35 if a veteran) when starting the internship, a college student or recent graduate (within the past 12 months at the time of application), enrolled in a degree-seeking program, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages diverse programs, including cultural resources. The Utah State Office is the lead office for the BLM in Utah and supports the District and Field Offices across the state. The successful candidate will assist with managing a Southwest and Four Corners archaeology collection and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) compliance. Projects and duties that support the management of the 100,000 object collection at the Utah State Office include updating catalog information, collections research, assisting with environmental and pest monitoring, assisting with NAGPRA, and assisting with ongoing collections projects as needs arise. The intern will assist the Utah State Office with NAGPRA responsibilities including developing itemized lists, inventories, and summaries, drafting correspondence, writing NAGPRA notices, and working with Tribal Nations and partner museums across the country on BLM Utah NAGPRA cases. The intern will work with the Curator and NAGPRA Coordinator to accomplish the museum and NAGPRA priorities of the BLM Utah cultural resources program.
Work may occur virtually, in an office setting, and at an off-site repository location. Housing, travel, and public transportation stipends will be provided. A background security investigation may be required prior to the start date. All NCPE internships accrue 4 hours of PTO for every 80 hours worked.
Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate. Once earned, the PLC certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal permanent, temporary, or term positions. Visit https://preservenet.org/ncpe-internships/ for details about this benefit. Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee Federal employment.
