  • Job Qualifications:

    The internship is suitable for a candidate whose primary interest is historical archeology. Experience with archeological best practices, or coursework in pursuit of a degree in anthropology, archeology, or associated cultural resource field. Preference will be given to applicants with the ability to focus and give attention to detail during data management and in writing composition.

    Applicant must pass a government background check to get access to the Park’s computer system.

Website National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program

This is an in-person internship in Skagway, Alaska, at Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. The position will be a part of a multi-year emergency excavation at the historic Dyea Townsite unit of the park where archeologists are responding to rapid river erosion of a National Historic Landmark (NHL) district associated with the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898.

The intern will process and catalog historic archeological field collections from the Dyea Townsite, a former Klondike Gold Rush boom town. Working with park archeologists, the intern will clean, research, photograph, and catalog artifacts. The internship may also include accompanying park staff in the field for GIS data collection and archeological excavations. Additional work could include GIS map making and draft report writing.

This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. The successful applicant must be 30 years of age or younger (or 35 years or younger if a Veteran) when beginning the internship. Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.  Once earned, the PLC hiring authority certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal temporary, term, or permanent positions.
