Website National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program

Overview: The National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE)’s Internship Program is a partnership with the National Park Service and other Federal agencies with cultural resource protection and public land management responsibilities. The purpose of the program is to accomplish needed and important work on federally protected lands while providing program participants with professional experience in their chosen fields. Interns work under the guidance of agency staff who are subject area experts to carry out the mission of the park.

Eligibility: To be eligible, applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old (or 35 if a veteran) when starting the internship, a college student or recent graduate (within the past 12 months at the time of application), enrolled in a degree-seeking program, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Description: This project aims to support tribal interests on the Tonto National Monument. The intern will support the Tonto National Monument by aiding the Monument’s Integrated Resources Program Manager and Tribal Liaison with program tribal consultation and assisting with the Monument’s current traditional use study project. In support of the traditional use study, the intern will coordinate with the program manager, the regional project manager, and the project contractor to complete tasks as needed (e.g., research, filing, CRIS data entry, etc.) and assist with tribal visits to the Monument. The intern may provide logistical support, serve as a guide during tribal site visits, and assist as needed with planning for visit agendas in preparation for these site visits. The intern may assist with other cultural program tasks as needed.

Duties: The primary duties of this position will involve assisting staff and contractors with tasks for the traditional use study including fulfilling information requests, assisting with site visit logistics, acting as an on-site guide during tribal member site visits, project research and data entry, and as assigned project related tasks. Additional Cultural Resources program tasks may include, but are not limited to, assisting with tribal consultation tasks; archaeological site condition assessment, redocumentation, or survey and documentation; assisting with preservation related projects, assisting with museum related tasks relating to cataloging, inventory, interpretive material development; office tasks such as library or data inventory, data entry, equipment inventory and organization, monthly housekeeping of workspaces, etc.; and assisting with special events (e.g. pop-ups, festivals, First Fridays, etc.).

Impact: This internship will provide dedicated support to tribal partners engaged in the Tonto National Monument traditional use study, a level of support that would not otherwise be available due to limited Monument staffing levels. This internship will also increase the capacity of the Integrated Resources Program to complete mandatory consultation for regulatory compliance, allowing the program to meet deadlines for the Resources, Facilities and Maintenance, and Interpretive programs’ projects in support of visitor services. These project deadlines will not be met without the additional support provided by the intern.

Other: This is an in-person position; no-cost staff housing is available. This position includes a one-time living stipend of $1750, and funding for formal or on-the-job training and related travel. The work schedule is flexible and can be negotiated with the supervisor for either full-time or part-time. All NCPE interns accrue 4 hours of PTO for every 80 hours worked.

PLC Certification: Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.  Once earned, the PLC certificate may be used to apply for eligible Federal permanent, temporary, or term positions. Visit https://preservenet.org/ncpe-internships/ for details about this benefit. Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee Federal employment.
