🔗Digital Media/Web Author Intern – 1020 hours
Website National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program
Vicksburg National Military Park preserves and tells the stories of one of the most pivotal campaigns in the Civil War, the period of occupation by the United States Army, and Reconstruction. These stories trace the path from Civil War to Civil Rights.
The Digital Media Intern will support a major restructuring of the Vicksburg National Military Park’s website. The intern will work with the park team and scholars to review and overhaul the existing website.
The National Park Service (NPS) uses a Content Management System platform that does not require html or coding knowledge. The intern will be trained in the CMS system. Interest in public history and strong writing ability are important. Work will include restructuring layout, preparing, and uploading images, authoring pages, and coordinating work by other team members. Major goals of the project include improving the virtual experience, developing more visually engaging pages, integrating into the site new research about under told stories including the experiences of African Americans, Native Americans, women, families, and civilians. The park has major research projects underway that are exploring these under told stories.
The position will help promote relevancy, diversity, and inclusion by supporting efforts by the park to tell the relevant stories of Vicksburg. In addition to exploring the relevancy of the Campaign and Siege of Vicksburg, the park is expanding storytelling and programming related to the lives of civilians including women, children, and families, the role of African Americans in the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the ongoing quest for Civil Rights rooted in the stories of Vicksburg. This project will allow the park to more fully tell stories of race, sacrifice, inequality, and justice.
